Choosing the Perfect Wedding Photographer

It seems almost cliché to say it, but it’s a fact that your wedding day is one of the most magical and memorable days of your life… You want to ensure that every moment is captured perfectly so that you can look back at the images over a lifetime, re-living each moment as if it was yesterday.

Great photography can tell the story of your day in a way that means you’ll never forget a thing. That's why we believe choosing the right wedding photographer is so important.

Full disclosure - Yes, we are photographers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we are the right fit for you… so read on to find out what you need to look for in your perfect wedding photographer.

The Digital Age

It’s fair to say that these days, pretty much everyone has a smartphone in their pocket. Being so readily available and producing images of such good quality, it can be tempting to wonder if you even need a professional photographer at your wedding…

Of course, we may be a little biased, but the simple answer has to be yes!

For one thing, you want your guests to be able to fully enjoy the day, which they won’t be able to do if they are acting as your photographer. Let your guests be present with you! Choosing a photographer with wedding experience will ensure that you are captured at your very best and that nothing gets left out.

Experience

When choosing a wedding photographer, consider their experience. You want to choose a photographer who knows weddings inside-out. Wedding days can be fast-paced, and having a team of professionals around you who understand the process can be integral to everything running smoothly.

You need a photographer who understands not only what makes a beautiful image, but how best to work with the venue, registrar, planners, caterers, florists, make-up artists, and all the rest of the team that goes into making your wedding perfect, and can work with them to get the best out of the day.

Photographic Style

One of the most important considerations when selecting a photographer is their photographic style. It may seem obvious, but choose a photographer who has a style that matches the type of photos you want! There is no right or wrong when it comes to photography and styles can vary dramatically. Take time to study a variety of different portfolios/galleries.

Are you looking for traditional posed shots or a more candid, journalistic style? Perhaps a mix of both? Do you favour bright, bold colours or a softer, more pastel palette?

Create yourself a mood board of images you like and ask yourself what they have in common. Is it the emotional feel of the images you connect with? Or perhaps the use of colour? Find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision.

Personality and Communication

Another important factor to consider when choosing a wedding photographer is their personality and communication style. You want to choose someone you feel comfortable with, who can put you at ease and make you feel relaxed in front of the camera. Make sure to speak to them to get a feel for how well you’ll get on, ask them questions and follow them on social media.

While we are on the subject of being friendly, I’ll be honest, the phone isn’t particularly my happy place (Simon, on the other hand, will talk your ear off for hours!) but I’d still FAR rather have a chat and know that we are on the same page than turn out not be be the right fit for you and your day, because it matters to us as photographers.

Lots of photographers offer ‘engagement’ or ‘getting to know you’ shoots, which are an excellent way of spending some time together prior to your wedding, and ensure you’ll feel much less nervous in front of the camera on the big day!

Budget and Packages

Of course, budget is always a consideration when choosing a wedding photographer. You want to choose someone who fits within your budget but who also offers packages that meet your needs.

When comparing packages, make sure to ask about the number of hours of coverage, the number of edited photos you'll receive, and any additional services they offer. Are the hours set or can you add on additional hours? If you don’t need full-day coverage, can a bespoke price be arranged? If in doubt, always ask!

Conclusion

In conclusion, choosing the perfect wedding photographer takes time and consideration. Your wedding day is a huge investment - in time, money and love - you want to make sure every detail is perfect, and that includes a photographer who can capture all that went into making your dream day.

Look for someone with experience and a style that aligns with your vision. Choose someone with a personality that puts you at ease. And, of course, choose someone who fits within your budget and offers packages that meet your needs.

With these considerations in mind, you can ensure that your wedding day is captured perfectly and that you'll have beautiful memories to cherish for generations.
